How to build a cascading filter in Discover

How to use the cascade option in a Discover

In this how to article, we will show you how to do to build a slicer that changes based on another slicer selection.

If you want to filter on values that are organized in a hierarchy, it makes sense to use the cascade option to 'pre-filter' the list of values in the lower hierarchies to reduce the values shown after you have selected the first filter.

In this example, we want the “Product Sub Categories” slicer to only reflect the member items that belong to the “Product Category” slicer selection.

Solution:

Short Video Explanation on how to add Cascading Slicers in Discover (see step by step solutions for Discover and Present below):

Detailed step by step Solution

Prepare the Discover Matrix Grid:

Lets Start by building a Discover Matrix Grid with a Sales Measure in the Column and Product Category and Product Sub Category in the Rows. (This Example is based on our Demo Data also available in the Explore Server)

In this example I want the Product Subcategory list to be determined by the Product Category List.

In this example I want the Product Subcategory list to be determined by the Product Category List.
Lets start by adding your lowest level slicer (In the example you can copy the Product Sub Category Chip into the filter drop zone)

Your Discover should now reflect the new slicer with the first item in the list showing in the matrix

Building the Cascade

Next select the dimension you want to use to define the Product Sub Category slicer In this case Product Category.
Right Click on the Product Category Chip and select the “Cascade To” Option.

Now a list of current Slicers/Filters will appear, select the slicer that you want the Product Category to interact with, in this case Product Sub Category.

In below example you can now see that the new Filter has been added and the Link between the two has updated.
Selecting a Product Category will now filter the second Filter Product Sub Category to only show relevant items.

You can change the slicer types to multi select as well and view groups that relate to each other when selected.

Using the Cascade Option in Present

In this example we have built the same basic Discover used in the previous version without any slicers.
Add the Matrix to a new Present Document and build two new Slicers, using the multi select type.

Product Category

Product Sub Category

Creating the Cascade in Present

Creating the cascade behavior between the two slicers is far easier than in the Discover method.

  • Select the Interaction tool from the visualization bar and then click on the first slicer, while holding the button down drag the cursor over the second slicer and let go.
  • A green interaction arrow should now link the two slicers.

Running the Dashboard now you will find that the selection I the first slicer determines the options available in the second slicer.
