Use one chart to filter (not just highlight) other charts

My presentation has the following plots:

  • Overall totals are shown for the current period (gauge) and trended over time (line).  These are at the top of the presentation.
  • Data by category are shown as bar for the current period.  A multi-line trend graph shows the categories over time.

When I select one of the categories on the bar chart it filters the overall figures at the top and highlights the selected category in the bottom.  I would like it to filter the multi-line trend and rescale the vertical axis to fit the data.  Is there a setting to accomplish that?

In the example below you can see the default and category select views.  Please note that I do have the Type on color in both graphs.  I would like to filter the sub-type trend graph from the type bar.

    Hi Anne,

Yes, there is a setting to accomplish this. Where you have created an interaction between analytic objects that share the same dimension, the default is to highlight but other options are available.

In your main ribbon menu, select "Show Interactions". The canvas will show which analytic objects interact with others using coloured arrows. A blue arrow indicates a highlight interaction, the arrow head at each end, that this works in both directions.

Click on the arrow joining the two objects concerned so that it gets thicker to show it is selected and bring up the interaction manager.

The intersection between our objects is highlighted, in my case Prod Cat to Cat by Time. The panel on the right shows the detail for the interaction. As above, where objects share a dimension, the default is to cross highlight. You can also however choose "Sync" to synchronise the two dimensions (for example drilling down on  a hierarchy), or Data, where the interaction will filter the target object with the selection from the source object.

Change the interaction to Data using the radio buttons. Note how the interaction arrow changes colour to Yeloow, to indicate a Data Interaction in one direction, while the reverse direction is still a blue cross highlight interaction. You can edit and change that as well of course.

Run your Dashboard. Selecting a bar  on the left now filters the trend lines on the right. the chart axes will dynamically change (if set that way in the discover) to optimise for the filtered data.

    Hope that helps.

      @Ian Macdonald
Got it applied. I noticed that it can get a little squirrely taking it off. If I clicked in a blank area in the from bar chart.  The filter would come off  the bars but remain on the target line graph.  But the reload and go back icons are simple enough and work well.

I was wondering if I could get the filter info to show in the target Report title.  I did see that when I switch the individual plot to full screen it does include the filter applied in the title; but the font is tiny.  I'll have to see if I can enlarge it somehow...

      Thanks again.

You can see that I've also applied the color lock so the Type color flows through to the Sub Type.

You can edit the font of the breadcrumb trail (the filter values passed across) in the Panel settings.

      Hope that helps.
