Data Source User Functionality and Required Permissions

The data source user is the account used by the system to provide administrative access to data sources on the platform. The account should be able to access all data sources through standard "Windows Authentication"
Some changes were made in the functionality of the data source user in BI Office v5.4sp1

  • In all versions:
    • In all versions and configurations the data source user is used when testing connectivity to a data source (Data Sources >Edit> Test)
  • Prior to BI Office v5.4sp1:
    • The data source user is used to access any file (Excel/ Text / Access) that have been uploaded to the Mashpit.
Therefore, the data source user needs read/write access to the Mash-pit shared folder on the Application Server. (This shared folder can reside on another server as well).
  • After BI Office v5.4sp1 - V5.5 RTM
    • The user that is running the application service AND the data source user needs read/write access to the Mash-pit shared folder.
    • When Support Effective Tokens is disabled, the data source user is only used for the Mash-Pit functionality. It must have the server administrator role on the Tabular Analysis server where the Mash-pit processed cubes are uploaded to.
    • When Support Effective Tokens is enabled, the data source user must have the administrator role on ALL data sources, or a local admin on each data source server.
  • BI Office V6.0 RTM onwards
    • Whether Support Effective Tokens is enabled or disabled, the data source user must have the administrator role on ALL data sources, or a local admin on each data source server.
