How to Create a Dynamic Date Selection in Data Discovery (formerly bioXL)

This article will help you create a report where you can select a range of dates and the date resolution (Year, Quarter, Month) in which the data will be presented.
Please note: to use the instructions bellow, you will need to have two date hierarchies/Attributes. One to limit the range (Days attribute in this example) and the other (Date hierarchy) is to set the desired display resolution (Year/Quarters/Months/Days).

Step 1: Creating a range to limit the selection.

  1. From Days attribute, we've created two parameters, one for the “From Date” and one for the “To Date”
  2. Using these parameters, we created a custom set that will contain the range of the dates selected in the "From Date" and "To Date" parameters. The set should look something like this:

Step 2: Creating a variable to enable selection between desired resolutions.

  1. Create a variable for the resolutions you would like to see in your grid.
  2. For example, when you click on Month in the variable, the grid will change to show months. This one will require some custom MDX code. Here is an example of the MDX in the set:

Please refer to the attached screenshot to see how this should look like eventually.
