Is there a PQL equivalent to the MDX Generate function?

I have a report that I am trying to build that will display a current year period and a prior year period. The user needs to be able to select a date range. The report would put the selected dates into the Current Year column and the same dates for the previous year into the Prior Year column. In MDX, I would generate the Prior Year dates like this:

GENERATE({ @DateRange }, { ParallelPeriod([Book Date].[Hierarchy].[Year], 1, [Book Date].[Hierarchy].CurrentMember) })

This would loop through all the dates in the parameter and go back to the same periods in the previous year. I'm not sure how to do something similar in PQL.

For example, I want to show a report that compares the data for dates 1/1/26 through 5/31/26 to data for 1/1/25 through 5/31/25.

How would I do this in PQL?

Hi Pyramid Team,

I can reproduce a UI crash in Model when opening the settings window for an Unpivot node.

Scenario:

ClickHouse > Table > Unpivot

Steps to reproduce:

Using the API to return the PQL or MDX of a Formulate

I have a need to retrieve a list of formulas from our instance that includes the name, description and the actual logic for documentation purposes. I have figured out how to get the first two items from the repository tables but the logic is embedded in a JSON column that looks a bit too tricky to extract. What we are looking for is the information typically shown in the Syntax Preview tab in Formulate. I stumbled across this API in the documentation and I am wondering if it returns what I am looking for:

getFormula

It claims to return the PQL or MDX representation of the formulate object. There is no sample of what the output looks like so I am wanting some confirmation that this is what I want before figuring out how to implement the code.

For example, let's say I have a custom formula/measure that is defined as a ratio and was built in Formulate using the Growth template in the Marketplace (A-B)/A. Would this API call return the actual column names seen in the Syntax Preview?

How can I proactively identify content that overloads runtime servers?

Hi Pyramid Team,

I am looking for recommendations on how to proactively identify Pyramid content that may overload runtime servers.

I had a case where opening a specific content item caused very high memory usage on runtime servers. The runtime machine became almost unresponsive because of memory exhaustion, and requests routed to that runtime started hanging.

My question is about prevention. I want to understand how an administrator can find this kind of risky or inefficient self-service content before it affects the environment.

Questions:

Are there built-in admin tools, logs, audit data, repository queries, or monitoring views that show which content items consume the most memory on runtime servers?

Is there a way to identify reports, dashboards, or models that create very large intermediate result sets or expensive runtime queries?

After a runtime overload event, is there a recommended way to identify which content item caused the memory spike?

Are there recommended limits, alerts, or isolation settings that can prevent a single heavy content item from overloading runtime servers?

What is the recommended process for reviewing and optimizing this type of content in self-service environments?

The goal is to detect and review this type of content in advance, before it overloads runtime servers.

Pyramid version: 2024.03.002

Here is a simplified example:

Rows 1-5 are from Discover 1

Row 6 is a simple Sum Total

Row 7 is coming from Discover 2 on sheet2

Row 8 is Row 6 divided by Row 7

This part is working as expected. I can change the slicer and it returns the correct data. The problem is when I drop it in a dashboard. The slicer in the dashboard, which I pulled from the Tabulate, is not changing the data even though the breadcrumb is showing that the value is being passed in. I’m sure it is something I missed in configuring either the slicer in Tabulate or the Visual Area. Do I need to create parameters? Should I not include a slicer in the tabulate? How do I get the dashboard and tabulate to communicate?

This problem exists in Version 2024.03.002.
To reproduce this issue, you need to have a table with at least one hierarchy with two levels, one measure and one other column.

Steps to reproduce:

Expand any Category (in my example – Furniture)

Actual behavior:

Sub-categories are not under the expanded Category, but are sorted like independent rows (The hierarchy is broken).

Desired behavior:

Hi Team,

I need help creating Previous Month Sales, Current Month Sales, and Growth % in a Pivot.

I have:

A Sales column

A Sales Date column in
yyyy-MM-dd
format

Initially, I created a custom Month column, and the calculation was working correctly. However, when I tried using the actual Sales Date column directly, it stopped working.

I have already tried using
Lag()
and the Previous option, but it is still not giving the expected result.

My requirement in the Pivot is:

1st Column = Previous Month Sales
2nd Column = Current Month Sales
3rd Column = Growth %

Also, I need the values to be dynamic according to the Sales Date filter selection.

The Sales Date will be used in the filter.

Could someone please suggest the correct way to achieve?

Thank you!

I created a new column to total them so I only have to filter on one variable. I am able to do this and it works great, however, I also need to total some of my measures to look at specific counts and values when the rows with the two measures do not equal 0. I understand you may not total on filters, sorting, N-of-N, or elimination logic, however, there must be some sort of plausible workaround. I don't agree with the statement that there is no use in totaling over something that you filtered on. Thank you.

DateDiff documentation says "dy" for days, but Custom Column only accepts "dd"

Hello PA Team,

I found an inconsistency between the PQL documentation and the actual behavior of DateDiff in a Custom Column.

https://help.pyramidanalytics.com/2024/Content/Root/developer/reference/fx/PQL/Common/Date-Time/DateDiff.htm?Highlight=datediff

According to the documentation for DateDiff, the supported flag for days is:
- "dy"
- "dayofyear"

However, when using this in a Custom Column, the following expression fails:

DateDiff(last_login_date, now(), "dy")

Error:
Unsupported date offset type: dy

At the same time, the following expression succeeds:

DateDiff(last_login_date, now(), "dd")

The issue is that "dd" is not mentioned in the documentation, while the documented "dy" does not work in this context.

Expected behavior:
- either "dy" should work as documented,
- or the documentation should be updated to reflect the actually supported flag values for this function in Custom Columns.

This looks like either a documentation issue or an inconsistency in the function implementation for Custom Columns.

Screenshots attached.

Hi PA team,

We would like to implement the following calculation:
We have a list of products, and we want to create a distinct count of these products.

However, for this measure, we would like the results to not be affected by the product color filter when used in a dashboard KPI or in a Discovery canvas.

In our data model, Product ID and Color are in the same table, and in Power BI there is an option to use REMOVEFILTERS inside CALCULATE to ignore specific filters for a measure.

Our question is:
👉 How can we implement similar functionality in Pyramid Analytics?
We have checked the community resources but could not find an equivalent option.

Thanks in advance for your support.

How can i get total number of presents and models in pyramid for version 2025.01.004 using pyramid sql repository.

Hi everyone,

We are running Pyramid in a single‑tenant deployment on our own VMs, and I am trying to generate daily stats for:

total active Models

total active Presents

This is to help us track adoption trends and “work in progress” over time.

From what I understand, the
content_tbl_item
table stores all content objects, and
item_type
identifies the object type. Based on documentation and older forum references, I have the following mappings:

item_type = 4 → Models

item_type = 8 → Presents

To calculate the active counts, I am using these queries:

Models

SQL

SELECT COUNT(*) AS etl FROM dbo.content_tbl_item WITH (NOLOCK)

WHERE item_type = 4 AND (is_deleted = 0 OR is_deleted IS NULL)

AND is_active = 1;

Presents

SQL

SELECT COUNT(*) AS present FROM dbo.content_tbl_item WITH (NOLOCK)

WHERE item_type = 8 AND (is_deleted = 0 OR is_deleted IS NULL)

AND is_active = 1;

My questions

Are these
item_type
values correct (4 = model, 8 = present) in a single‑tenant Pyramid install?

Is this the correct and supported way to count active content items in Pyramid?

Are there any other flags or joins I should include to ensure accuracy (e.g., multi-version rows, ownership, tenant filters, etc.)?

Customizing - Pyramid Homepage

Hello everyone,

We are currently designing our own homepage in Pyramid to better tailor it to the needs of our users. The latest reports and favourites should enable them to quickly find the most important reports again. On top of that, we use the news feed to present new features, such as new dashboards or new data models. Futhermore, users can report system malfunctions to us via the ticket system.

Overall, we are satisfied with the content but less so with the layout and appearance. For example, there is no option for a free text field. We currently use discoveries and name them according to the heading. But that shouldn't really be the case.

Does anyone else have any best practice examples or experience with how to make the home page more visually appealing?

I am grateful for any tips.

Best regards, Jona

Hello everyone,
I would like to create a formula (PQL) in an InMemory model that allows me to display the cumulative booking amount as Year to Date( YTD).

The attribute I would like to use for the months is called ‘[KJ Month in Year]’.

My first approach was to use a parameter for all ‘[KJ Month in Year]’ members

I then inserted this into a list using the Month to Date function.

In the last step, I then insert the list into an aggregation to obtain only the cumulative value.

However, at the end I receive an error message.

Does anyone have an alternative approach in mind that works?

Thanks and best regards, Jona

Hello. For some grid reports, we are using data model column descriptions to define data; Mousing over the column name in the Discover brings up the tool tip, showing the definition, but also the column name itself and the data model location.

A couple of questions - is there a way to configure the tool tip so that the column name and column location are omitted?

Secondly, how can we increase the tool tip's font size?

I've looked through the help and Pyramid itself to no avail.

How to calculate "New vs Existing Buyers" with dynamic slicer context in PQL?

Hi everyone,

I'm building a product launch dashboard and struggling with PQL filter context. I need to calculate several "New vs Existing Buyers" metrics that require comparing two different time periods while respecting slicer selections.

My data structure:

panelist_id
- unique buyer identifier

supplier
,
brand
,
sub_brand
- supplier hierarchy

class
,
category
,
sub_category
- product hierarchy

period_type
- 'LAUNCH' or 'COMPARISON'

is_launch_product
- TRUE/FALSE

sales_amount
- measure

The metrics I need to build:

1. New Buyers % by Supplier/Brand/Sub_brand:

A panelist is "existing" if they bought from the supplier/brand/sub_brand in COMPARISON period (excluding launch product)

A panelist is "new" if they did NOT buy from the supplier/brand/sub_brand in COMPARISON period

Formula: Count of new panelists / Count of all launch buyers

Must work dynamically with slicers on supplier OR brand OR sub_brand OR Class Or Category Or Sub Category

2. New Buyers % by Class/Category/Sub_category:

Same logic but for product hierarchy

A panelist is "existing" if they bought from the class/category/sub_category in COMPARISON period (excluding launch product)

A panelist is "new" if they did NOT buy from the class/category/sub_category in COMPARISON period

Must work dynamically with slicers on class OR category OR sub_category

The problem:

When I use
Filter(AllMembers([panelist_id]), ...)
, the slicer context is completely ignored inside the Filter.

What I tried:

-- New Buyers (using Except)
Count(
    Except(
        Filter(
            AllMembers([table].[panelist_id]),
            ([measures].[sales_amount], [table].[is_launch_product].[true], [table].[period_type].[LAUNCH]) > 0
        ),
        Filter(
            AllMembers([table].[panelist_id]),
            ([measures].[sales_amount], [table].[period_type].[COMPARISON]) > 0
        )
    )
)
/
Count(
    Filter(
        AllMembers([table].[panelist_id]),
        ([measures].[sales_amount], [table].[is_launch_product].[true], [table].[period_type].[LAUNCH]) > 0
    )
)

Expected result: When supplier slicer = "Tnuva", the second Filter should return panelists who bought from Tnuva in COMPARISON (24 panelists).

Actual result: The second Filter returns ALL panelists who bought anything in COMPARISON (41 panelists), ignoring the supplier slicer entirely.

Other attempts that didn't work:

CurrentMember([supplier])
in the tuple - still ignored

NonEmpty()
- didn't respect slicer context

Nested
Sum(AllMembers([brand]), Sum(AllMembers([sub_brand]), ...))
- didn't work

Intersect()
instead of
Except()
- same problem

Verified in SQL:

-- This returns the correct numbers:
-- Total launch buyers: 28
-- Existing buyers (same supplier): 24
-- New buyers: 4 (14.3%)

My questions:

Is there a way in PQL to make a nested Filter() respect the current slicer context? Something equivalent to DAX's CALCULATE with KEEPFILTERS?

If not possible with a single measure, what's the recommended approach?

Separate measures per hierarchy level (6 measures)?

Pre-calculate in database?

Is there a function I'm missing that can "inject" the current slicer selection into a Filter?

Thanks for any help!

I am observing consistent failures when attempting to Export to Excel, particularly with large datasets (e.g., ~300k cells). Notably, exporting the exact same report to PDF succeeds, which suggests the issue is specific to the Excel generation engine. (2025.02.222 (Linux environment).

Symptoms & Errors:
The export fails almost immediately, and I am seeing the following errors in the system logs:

Code Exception (NPE):
java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot invoke "api.models.printing.enums.ExportTitleContext.ordinal()" because "titleContext" is null
at bl.printingEngine.PrintingEngineImplementors.ExcelSheetFactory.getSubTitle(ExcelSheetFactory.java:212)

Timeouts:
On some attempts, the task simply times out (even after increasing maxTimeForProcess to 600s).

Troubleshooting attempted:
I have already tried the following tuning steps with no improvement:

Reduced printing parallelism in Task Services.

Increased printing/conversion memory limits (Max Active Server Size).

Increased all relevant timeouts (Printing job timeout, Query limits).

Restarted the Task Engine.

Please verify this on your side. This appears to be a critical bug with the Excel export functionality in the new release.

I have a Rank column (integer) in my data that represents either week rank or month rank

I have a Period Display column that indicates whether the data is "Weekly" or "Monthly"

Monthly data: rank ranges from 1-24

What I Need: I want to create an interface where:

User selects "Weekly" or "Monthly" (via buttons or dropdown)

Based on that selection, range sliders appear showing:

If Weekly: Start Rank (1-102) and End Rank (1-102)

If Monthly: Start Rank (1-24) and End Rank (1-24)

These slider values filter my data by the Rank column
